Q: What is the REALTOR’S responsibility when showing or listing a property that was the site of a meth lab?

A: The reason REALTORS® need to learn about meth labs is because the chemicals used in the manufacture of meth include corrosives, solvents, drugs and potentially other poisons. The remnants of these hazardous, toxic and explosive substances used in the manufacture of meth can cause short and long term injuries to people, including unsuspecting persons viewing the property, such as REALTORS® and their clients or customers. It poses an even greater risk for future inhabitants of the property, particularly children. A meth lab site must be properly remediated before it is safe to be occupied. This applies to all types of property, including but not limited to rental and commercial.

The Minnesota Association of REALTORS® is the largest professional trade association in the state with more than 17,000 members who are active in all aspects of the real estate industry.
